Commercial Upholstery – Vinyl and Fabric for Restaurant Seating

Commercial upholstery is contract-grade vinyl and fabric made for the heavy, daily use of restaurant chairs, bar stools and booths, where residential materials wear out quickly. Seatingpoint offers a range of commercial vinyls and fabrics on most upholstered models, so restaurants, hotels, bars and designers can balance durability, cleanability and comfort.

What do rub counts mean?

Abrasion resistance shows how well a material survives friction from people sitting and sliding. Two test methods are common:

  • Wyzenbeek (double rubs) – widely used in North America. A figure of around 30,000 double rubs or more is commonly treated as heavy-duty for commercial seating.
  • Martindale (cycles) – widely used in Europe. Around 30,000–40,000 cycles or more is often specified for contract seating.

The two methods are not directly convertible. Ask for the test results of the specific material and compare like with like. Also check seam strength, colorfastness to light and the fire-safety rules that apply to your venue's location.

How to keep upholstery looking new

  • Wipe vinyl with mild soap and water; avoid solvents and bleach unless the manufacturer allows them.
  • Blot spills on fabric immediately and vacuum regularly to remove grit.

Pair upholstery with frame finishes from our wood stain and metal color range, or use it on restaurant booths and banquettes. Order vinyl and fabric samples, shipped within 2–4 business days.

Commercial upholstery: frequently asked questions

How many double rubs does restaurant seating need?

As a common industry guideline, upholstery rated around 30,000 double rubs or more on the Wyzenbeek test is considered heavy-duty and suitable for busy commercial seating. In Europe, the Martindale test is used, with about 30,000–40,000 cycles or more typical for contract seating. Always request the actual test data for the material.

Is vinyl or fabric easier to clean in a restaurant?

Vinyl is easier because its non-porous surface stops liquids from soaking in, so most spills wipe away with mild soap and water. Fabric needs prompt blotting and periodic deep cleaning, although many contract fabrics have stain-resistant treatments. For high-turnover dining, vinyl is the low-maintenance option.

Can I use my own fabric (COM) on restaurant chairs?

Custom upholstery is possible on many Seatingpoint models, so ask the sales team about using customer-supplied fabric. Before ordering it, confirm the fabric is rated for commercial seating, meets the fire-safety rules where it will be used, and that you have enough yardage for the chair or booth design.
